Hollows Out of Time

Camerata String Quartet and prepared piano

Sunday 1 April 2018
Lagavulin

Hollows out of time, composed by Erik Griswold, is a collection of eleven miniatures written for prepared piano and string quartet. The work takes its title from the venue for which it was composed—Lagavulin, meaning “hollow before the mill.” It also serves as a subtle homage to Griswold’s teacher, Roger Reynolds, whose evocative string orchestra piece Whispers Out of Time earned the Pulitzer Prize in 1989. Hollows Out of Time was commissioned by Bruce and Jocelyn Wolfe to mark the inaugural performance and premiere in the newly completed Lagavulin Concert Hall in 2018. The album was released on June 5, 2019, via Bandcamp.
